RUMC Youth Trip June 2018
This summer has been busy and Divine Providence Training Center’s Camp Chemi Chemi has been filled with the sounds of laughter and learning more about our Kingdom building ministry.
The RUMC youth team traveled over at the beginning of June and were able to spend ten days working with our community of pastors. First, they visited Strong Tower orphanage supported by one of our Alumni pastors, Martha Mwai, in Navaisha where they spent the day playing with the kids atop the ridge overlooking Lake Naivasha and sharing an African meal in between games and activities. Seeing the kids join in on sun glass decorating, pictures, soccer, rope jumping, and bubbles was a testimony to how God is using our pastors to care for the orphans and invite them into His loving family. On Sunday, they attended Paul and Martha’s church which boasts over 100 youth members! The team dramatized the story of Jericho with the Sunday School class and Jason Scott shared what it means to see the world through Jesus’ eyes as the congregation prayed over his ministry and celebrated his recent graduation from Asbury Seminary.
Thanks to a generous donation from the RUMC Foundation, the RUMC team was able to volunteer at the largest Community Medical Camp in Matasia. The local chief was honored to have such an amazing event in his community and marveled at how we had transformed Camp Chemi with a festoon of medical tents and fun filled sports venues. Because of the grant money, the team was able to partner with 12 Kenyan physicians, a pharmacist, and a nutritionist from Kenyatta Hospital, as well as a local rehab team. Over the course of the day, over 1000 children and adults were seen for general ailments, malaria, HIV and Blood sugar tests, deworming, cancer and HIV screening, eye and ear evaluation, nutrition evaluation/counseling, physical rehabilitation, and medications.
One older visitor exclaimed after seeing the ear doctor, “I came here unable to hear and now I can hear my footsteps!” Prayers for those who were sick and praise music for the crowd happened throughout the day as well face painting, balloon animals, volleyball, and soccer. It truly was a blessed day.
The RUMC team was also able to fellowship with a local school where they shared dances, worship songs and a volleyball challenge. The youth mingled with students in the classroom and discussed questions on a range of topics including parent discipline, dress codes, careers, high schools, colleges and an average school day.
Toward the end of the RUMC trip, the team got to work side-by-side with Pastor Samuel Kinyanjui and James Njoroge’s church, Living Water, as they finished the foundation of their new church with cement. Both the pastors were in the first class at DPTC and God called them to build this church in Matasia. One church member stated, “Thanks to DPTC, they have light on their hill, which was darkened before they came.”
